چکیده

and clatter. The Italians call them buffone — clowns. The large white grubs feed on roots and can be a major pest of grass and potatoes. Now controlled by pesticides, they were once far more abundant locally. In 1574, adult cockchafers were so numerous in the Severn Valley that their drowned bodies blocked the wheels of watermills, the book describes. In parts of Europe, if not in Britain, the beetles and larvae were roasted or stewed and eaten by humans. The book is a delight of illustration, information and anecdote about the world of invertebrates. Anyone who seeks identification from a regular guide would learn a great deal more by then turning to this book.

The Preparative Isolation of Imaginal Discs from Larvae of Drosophila Melanogaster

Imaginal discs of insccts have long been known to be embryonic Anlagen (1). Indeed, in Drosophila, the external structures in the head and thoracic regions, as well as some in the abdominal region, develop from imaginal discs (2). Discs develop normally when transplanted into larvae, and Schneider (3) has recently shown that eye discs develop normally and become pigmented in a defined medium. T...

Isolation of genes active during hormone-induced morphogenesis in Drosophila imaginal discs.

Mass-isolated Drosophila imaginal discs cultured in vitro undergo morphogenesis (evagination) in response to the insect steroid hormone 20-hydroxyecdysone. In vitro translation of mRNA isolated from evaginating discs shows accumulation of at least five new mRNA transcripts that are present only in membrane-bound polysomal RNA and presumably encode imaginal disc membrane or secreted proteins. Us...

A screen for genes expressed in Drosophila imaginal discs.

The development of Drosophila imaginal discs serves as a model system to understand how genes determine the shape and size of an organ. The identification of genes involved in this process is an important step towards this goal. Here we describe a P-element based enhancer trap screen for genes expressed in the larval imaginal discs. Our aim was to establish a large collection of enhancer trap l...

The embryonic origin of imaginal discs in Drosophila.

The thoracic imaginal discs of Drosophila melanogaster can be observed during embryogenesis as clusters of cells with particular shapes, sizes and behaviours. These structures can be detected soon after germ band shortening and their development appears to be tightly linked to that of the larval epidermis.

Dissection and immunostaining of imaginal discs from Drosophila melanogaster.

A significant portion of post-embryonic development in the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster, takes place within a set of sac-like structures called imaginal discs. These discs give rise to a high percentage of adult structures that are found within the adult fly. Here we describe a protocol that has been optimized to recover these discs and prepare them for analysis with antibodies, transcrip...

Lumenal transmission of decapentaplegic in Drosophila imaginal discs.

Drosophila imaginal discs are sac-like appendage primordia comprising apposed peripodial and columnar cell layers. Cell survival in disc columnar epithelia requires the secreted signal Decapentaplegic (DPP), which also acts as a gradient morphogen during pattern formation. The distribution mechanism by which secreted DPP mediates global cell survival and graded patterning is poorly understood. ...
